December Early Intervention Activities You Can Do At Home

Three activities ideas you can do with your toddler to boost their speech and language skills.

Four pictures of kids that look tired.

1: Repeat a Target Word (example: hat)

They Feel. Teaching feeling words can help kids understand their emotions. Practice reading body language by pointing out what the eyes, mouth, shoulders, hands, etc. do when we feel sleepy or tired. Try this with other emotions, too.

Practice the pronoun “they.”

2: Put Them On

Put Them On. Teaching prepositions like “on” through real life experiences can help kids learn. Many toys come with parts and pieces than need to be put “on.” Using the on during play is great because there are so many opportunities for repetition. Think about other words that would be helpful for your child to know during play.

3: I See Toys

I see Toys. Toy vocabulary is very motivating. If your child isn’t using words, try having them request their favorite toys. Playing with toys like bubbles gives your child multiple opportunities to make requests. Passing, chasing after or kicking a ball are other good play activities for learning toy words. What are your child’s favorite toys to play with? How can you get them to use the word during play? Keep in mind not to get to the point where your child is frustrated. Keep it fun!
