December Preschool Activities You Can Do At Home
Three activity ideas you can do with your preschooler to boost their speech and language skills.
1: Short-Term Memory
What’s Missing? A simple game you can play at home. Choose a few objects and put them out on the table or floor. Name each object out loud together. Repeat it a few times so your child can remember them. Have them close their eyes then remove an object. Can your child repeat the names in their head to tell what is missing? This builds their short term verbal memory. Note: these words are all s blends.
2: Sorting Objects
Cleaning up can be a great opportunity for learning. Name objects as you pick them up. Follow directions to pick up or put away toys. Practice sorting toys by category (dishes, shapes, animals). Tip: practice these skills when clean up is small, you’re not in a rush, and your child is happy. Don’t worry about adding anything extra to busy days, big messes, and frustrated kids.
3: Inferencing
Guess What’s in the Bag is a great game you can play at home. Take a familiar object and hide it in a bag (or box). You can let your child feel the object and guess what it is or give them some clues. This activity helps build vocabulary and inferencing skills that are important for reading. Go back and talk about how to listen for key words that give good clues.
