February Early Intervention Activities You Can Do At Home

Three activities ideas you can do with your toddler to boost their speech and language skills.

Six young children who are either smiling or have a sad expression.

1: Learning Emotions

Teaching feeling words can help kids understand their emotions.

Young kids can learn words like; happy, sad, tired, and hungry.

Practice reading body language by pointing out what the eyes, mouth, shoulders, hands, etc. do when we feel happy.

Tip: Talk about how you’re feeling around your child, “It’s almost time for lunch. I’m feeling hungry”.

Four boxes with images that show examples of the word blowing.

2: Guess the Word Game

Use the four pictures (or pictures in books) to guess the secret word.

What do you notice about these scenes?

What action is the same in all of them? (Hint, the word is a verb).

Answer: blowing

Challenge: Can you do that action?

Seven pictures of children's toys that include 3 dolls and 4 boats.

3: Daily Task - Activities for Cleaning Up

Cleaning up can be a great learning opportunity.

  • Name objects as you pick them up.

  • Follow directions to pick up or put away toys, “Put the boat in the basket”.

  • Practice sorting toys by category (dolls vs. boats).

Tip: practice these skills when clean-up is small, you’re not in a rush, and your child is happy. Don’t worry about adding anything extra to busy days, big messes, and frustrated kids.
