January Kindergarten Speech Activities You Can Do At Home

Three activity ideas you can do with your child to boost their speech and language skills.

1: Talk About The Parts

Learning the parts of an object is an easy way to build vocabulary.

Label the part and give your child some information about it, ”That is the sleeve. The sleeve is part of the jacket that covers your arm.”

Challenge the family to find other clothes with these words, “What else do you have with a hood?”

Challenge: try picking a new common object each week to describe.

2: Break Down Problems

When you or your child is experiencing a problem you have a quick 5-minute learning opportunity.

Helping them learn to communicate a problem and work through how to solve it is excellent for their critical thinking.

Tips:

  • Use specific words to describe the problem, “My throat hurts” vs. “I don’t feel good”

  • Ask your child what they would do, then guide the conversation to a helpful solution if necessary.

  • Talk about it afterward to see if their solution worked. Would they do anything different next time?

3: Practice Pronouns

Reading together is a great time to practice answering WH questions, like “Who”.

Wh questions can be confusing for some kids. They may respond to this question by pointing to the book instead of the child holding the book.

Teach them that when we ask “who,” we are referring to a person, character, or animal.
