July Preschool Speech Activities You Can Do At Home

Three activity ideas you can do with your preschooler to boost their speech and language skills.

1: Syllables

Clap the Syllables. Clapping syllables is an early reading skill. First, go through and name each picture so your child knows what the words are. Then, slowly say each word breaking it into syllables. Clap the beats as you go. This helps a child learn to listen for patterns and the sounds in words.

Vocabulary: Use this page to talk about toys.

2: Vocabulary in Play

Verbs in Play. Talk about the main idea of these pictures, “Look, she is playing with play dough.” Read the verbs aloud. Point to a picture and pause. Can your child make up a sentence about what is happening? Did they use verb that was given? If they need help model a sentence for them, ”The girl is rolling. She is pouring.”

3: The /k/ Sound

Hidden Objects. All of the hidden objects on this page are words with the /k/ speech sound. Some kids will make a /t/ sound in the front of their mouth instead of a /k/ in the back (fronting). If your child has trouble with this sound, open your mouth and show them where your tongue goes when you say these words (to the back). Can they copy you?
