July Early Intervention Speech Activities You Can Do At Home
Three activity ideas you can do with your toddler to boost their speech and language skills.
1: Singing Wheels on the Bus
The Wheels on the Bus. Singing is a fun and engaging way to keep a child’s attention and learn language at the same time. Adding visuals (this picture page) and gestures (movements that go with the song) activates more parts of the brain. This helps with understanding and memory.
2: Asking for Help
I Need Help. Does your child get easily frustrated or have difficulty asking for help? This is common with early communicators. Teaching the word ”help” in sign language may improve their communication. This tool can be used when emotions are high or your child doesn’t have the words to tell you what they need.
3: Repetition
Hop Hop Hop. Vocabulary, learn while doing. Movement gives learning a boost and is helpful for teaching action words (verbs). Speech: The word “hop” is a great word for young kids to practice. The sounds /h/, /o/, and /p/ are some of the first sounds kids learn. This consonant + vowel + consonant, or CVC word, is also a good one to focus on the last sound in words (final consonant).
