May Kindergarten Speech Activities You Can Do At Home
Three activity ideas you can do with your kindergartener to boost their speech and language skills.
1: Prepositions
These prepositions, in, next to, between, through, tell us where the subject is in relation to something else.
Examples of sentences:
”The boy went through the tunnel.
The elephant is in the water.
The dog is between their feet.
The girl is next to her pet.”
As children learn to use prepositional phrases (ex. through the tunnel), their sentences will get longer.
2: The “Sh” Sound
Early readers are learning the connection between letters and sounds.
The cue of bringing your finger to your lips to say “sh” is likely something kids are familiar with.
This cue connects “sh” for quiet and rounding your lips to say “sh.”
Tip: If your child is learning to sound out words and gets stuck on “sh,” try using the gesture of bringing your finger to your lips to see if they remember the sound. something else that would belong in that category, such as, “Name another fruit.”
3: Answering “wh” questions
Many kids can use extra practice answering wh questions.
Early question words include, who, what, and where.
Then, kids learn when, why, and how many.
Good to Know: Answering simple questions about something they’ve just heard or read, ”Who loves to play guitar?” is more difficult than answering something they already know, “Who is your teacher?”
(Answers: AJ, guitar, school)
