May Preschool Speech Activities You Can Do At Home

Three activity ideas you can do with your preschooler to boost their speech and language skills.

A young girl building with blocks surrounded by examples of what she would share at show and tell.

1: Show and Tell

Show and Tell is great for practicing oral language and asking/answering questions.

Read about what this child brought for show and tell in the top picture.

Then, look below to practice asking/answering questions.

Challenge: Can your child think of any other questions they would ask?

Six sets of pictures that show two fruits next to each other, one is big and one is small.

2: Size

Let’s practice learning about size.

This comparison activity is working on adding ends, like –er, to change the meaning of a word.

small + er = smaller

putting er at the end adds meaning to the word.

Challenge: Can you think of other words we add er to?

There are four pictures that show two young boys playing with a train set next to the verbs; building, connecting, sharing, and watching

3: Main Idea and Making Sentences

Talk about the main idea of these pictures,

“Look, they are playing with trains.”

Read the verbs aloud. Point to a picture and pause.

Can your child make up a sentence about what is happening?

Did they use verb that was given?

If they need help model a sentence for them.

For example, “The boy is building,” or “They are sharing.”
