May Early Intervention Speech Activities You Can Do At Home

Three activity ideas you can do with your toddler to boost their speech and language skills.

Five pictures of young kids with their moms.

1: Pronoun “My”

My” is an early pronoun.

Other early pronouns include, I, it, me, you, mine, he, she, we, your and yours.

Adding pronouns to another word is a way for young children to expand from single words to phrases.

Pronoun + noun = my cup.

Pronoun + verb = we sleep.

Pronoun + adjective = you happy.

Practice using pronouns. Look at pictures together and talk about who’s in your family.

2: Vocabulary - Vehicles

Young kids are often fascinated by cars, trucks, planes, and trains.

Follow their lead and use them as an opportunity to learn.

Point out vehicles you see when you’re out for a walk.

Talk about where they are, “The plane is in the sky.”

Model using the starter phrase, I see a car.” “I see a truck.”

Can they copy you?

3: Describing

These pictures were created to work on both making phrases and using descriptive words.

If your child can say “Boots,” think of what other words you can add to it to make a phrase.

Here are some examples:

adjective + noun = “Little boots”

pronoun + noun = ”Your boots”

verb + noun = ”Take off boots”.

Tip: To work on describing, look for items that are similar and point out what is different about them (little, muddy, striped).
