June Kindergarten Speech Activities You Can Do At Home

Three activity ideas you can do with your kindergartener to boost their speech and language skills.

A group of objects that end in either a t or k; kite, jet, lock, duck, bike, sock, goat, rock, boat, and cat.

1: CVC Words

Help your child learn to read with these short, simple words.

CVC stands for Consonant (any letter that is not a vowel), Vowel (letters a e i o u), and Consonant.

Notice that some of these words have 4 letters, but they only have 3 sounds.

Kite is k-i-te, boat is b-oa-t, duck is d-u-ck.

Speech: use this page to target final consonants, fronting, /k/ sounds in words

2: Empty or Full

Let’s learn about the opposites empty and full using these picture examples.

The vocabulary for the container, basket, vase, and bucket, may be new to your child.

What are these containers made out of?

Paper, glass, plastic?

Challenge: Extend this activity by creating your own set of containers that are empty and full. The kitchen, bathtub, or sandbox are great places to work on these opposites.

3: Staying on Topic

Does your child get off topic?

Some kids don’t pick up on conversation rules and need to be taught these skills more directly.

Help your child stay on topic by talking about what a main ideas is.

Ask, “Does what you have to say fit in with that topic?”

Teach your child how to appropriately change the subject or how to start a new conversation to talk about what they want to share.
