November Early Intervention Speech Activities You Can Do At Home

Three activity ideas you can do with your toddler to boost their speech and language skills.

1: Sign Language

Does your child get easily frustrated or have difficulty asking for help? This is common with early communicators. Teaching the word ”eat” in sign language may improve their communication. This tool can be used when emotions are high, or your child doesn’t have the words to tell you what they need.

2: The “Mmmm” Sound

What does Maria Like? Label foods and give your child a lot of opportunities to practice /m/ at the beginning of words. Are there new foods your child doesn’t know? Give them a try this week. When exploring new foods give your child a chance to smell and feel them. Do they make a noise when you eat them? Remember that eating involves all your senses.

3: Imitation

Play skills and language skills are closely related. Young children show their understanding of things by how they use them before they can express it in words. Does your child like to play with tools?  Do they play with a baby doll different than a puppy stuffed animal? These are all good signs that early language is developing.
