October Kindergarten Speech Activities You Can Do At Home

Three activity ideas you can do with your kindergartener to boost their speech and language skills.

Six colorful fall leaves with a white background.

1: Colors

Fall Leaves. Finding colors in nature is a fun way to introduce this vocabulary. Collect leaves or flowers in an assortment of colors and sort them. Or, have a color scavenger hunt. Not only are they learning, but they’ll be getting movement in as well.

2: Draw and Tell

Draw and Tell. Children in early elementary school will often be asked to draw their ideas and experiences. This is a first step toward writing by organizing thoughts and sharing information. Try keeping a journal by having your child draw something they did. What details do they add to the pictures to show meaning?

Nine images of items that are either hard or soft; hard hat, yarn, blanket, kitten, brick, rock, bread, piggybank, knit hat.

3: Adjectives

Is it soft? A page with vocabulary, adjective, and yes/no questions all in one. Can your child name these pictures? Do they know the adjective soft? If not, look for things around your house that are soft to teach them? Think of more adjectives they can learn.
