September Early Intervention Speech Activities You Can Do At Home

Three activity ideas you can do with your toddler to boost their speech and language skills.

1: Feelings

Who Feels Happy? Who Feels Sad? Teaching feeling words can help kids understand their emotions. Practice reading body language by pointing out what the eyes, mouth, shoulders, hands, etc. do when we feel happy and sad. Try this with other emotions, too.

2: Community Helpers

Most kids like to play dress-up. Pull out some sunglasses, hats and other clothes from the closet and start a dress-up box. Talk about what clothes these people are wearing. Your child may not know what these jobs are yet. That’s okay. You can still talk with them about what they do. Point to each one as you go across the page.

3: Modeling Vocabulary

Choose the Words You Use. Think about the toys your child loves to play with. Now think about words you can use to expand their vocabulary during play. Verbs, or action words, are a great place to start. Choose a few action words that go with the toy and repeat them over and over as you play together. If your child isn’t saying them, yet, that’s okay. Hearing words while they are doing the actions is helping them learn language.
