September Preschool Speech Activities You Can Do At Home

Three activity ideas you can do with your preschooler to boost their speech and language skills.

A young girl pointing to three school items; scissors, a green book, a glue stick.

1: The Function of Objects

Stating the function of objects means telling what they do or what you do with them. This helps to build vocabulary and skills for describing. Our natural response to these questions is just to point out the answer. It’s fine to keep this way of answering natural. We don’t want to train kids to sound like little robots. However, after they have shown you they know the functions, go back and make a sentences for each picture,

Six boxes of pictures showing the number two; a 2 candle, two fingers, the number two, two bags, two cookies, and two boots.

2: The Number Two

The Number Two. Preschoolers are beginning to learn early academic vocabulary like colors, shapes, and numbers. You can help your child learn to count to 10, identify how many items in groups of 5 or less, and begin to recognize written numbers. Note: If your child isn’t using many words, yet, start with more functional words for communicating wants and needs like common nouns, verbs, and adjectives.

Four pictures of young boys above the pronouns he and him.

3: Pronouns

A pronoun is a word we use to take the place of a noun. Both “he” and “him” are pronouns we use to replace a name. This can be confusing for young children. Use these sentences to practice when to use the word “he” and when to use the word “him.” If your child is mixing these up, repeat their sentence back to them using the correct word. Child: “Him is eating pizza.” Adult: “Yes, I see. He is eating pizza.”
