April Kindergarten Speech Activities You Can Do At Home

Three activity ideas you can do with your kindergartener to boost their speech and language skills.

Four boxes that each have two rhyming words on the left and four pictures of objects that also rhyme with each set of words.

1: Rhyming

Rhyming is an early literacy skill. In this Picture, kids name two words that rhyme then find another rhyming word given four choices.

Challenge: see if your child can come up with more rhyming words on their own (fly, pie, tie, bye).

Four boxes with groups of pictures from the same categories; fruit, vehicles, insects, and trees.

2: Categories

Categories are often used when defining words.

For example, “A truck is a kind of vehicle.

Knowing what category a word belongs to also helps us remember it.

Extend this activity by asking your child if they can name something else that would belong in that category, such as, “Name another fruit.”

A young boy watering plants surrounded by things you need for gardening.

3: Giving Directions

How do you water the plants?

Can your child give you directions to complete familiar routines?

Organizing thoughts on how something is done can be difficult for kids.

Use these pictures to help talk through the steps together.

Tip: Include transition words like, first, then, and next.
