August Early Intervention Speech Activities You Can Do At Home

Three activity ideas you can do with your toddler to boost their speech and language skills.

Two sets of matching pictures showing a variety of colorful little boys clothes on a white background.

1: Naming Clothes

Match 2. Matching is an early thinking skill. It teaches kids to notice things that are alike. These pairs of pictures are identical except for their size (big and little). Practice matching things at home with two of the same: socks, shoes, cups, or spoons.

Three common items you'd find in the bathroom; toothpaste, toothbrush, and hair brush.

2: Verbal Memory

What’s Missing? This is an example of a simple game you can play at home. Choose a few objects and put them out on the table or floor. Name each object out loud. Repeat it a few times so your child can remember them. Have them close their eyes then remove an object. Can your child repeat the names in their head to tell what is missing? This builds their short-term verbal memory. Note: these words are all hygiene items.

3: Adjectives

Ew! That’s Dirty. The word “dirty” in an adjective. It describes something. Does your child know what things can be “dirty” or “clean”? Dirty and clean are opposites (antonyms). It may help to make sure your child understands one word of the pair before you focus on the opposite.
