August Preschool Speech Activities You Can Do At Home

Three activity ideas you can do with your preschooler to boost their speech and language skills.

Four boxes of school supplies showing scissors, crayons, notebooks, and backpacks.

1: Naming Objects

Can your child name a group of objects? Say, “These are all notebooks.” Adding +s (or +es) to the end of a word can make it plural. When someone uses a noun with  plural s, it shows they understand two things: 1) what it is (crayon) and 2) that there is more than one (crayons).  Note: plurals can be spelled with an +s or +es. The word changes for irregular plurals, like child/children.

Six boxes of things that start with the letter b above hands clapping out the syllables.

2: Syllables

Clap the Syllables. Clapping syllables is an early reading skill. First, go through and name each picture so your child knows what the words are. Then, slowly say each word breaking it into syllables. Clap the beats as you go. This helps a child learn to listen for patterns and the sounds in words.

Literacy/Speech. All the words on this page start with /b/.

Six boxes comparing groups of objects, one showing more and one showing less.

3: Which Shows More?

Which shows more? Learning about more/less is a basic concept. These compare the quantity of two groups.  You can practice this skill during daily routines like meals and playtime. “Which plate has more pretzels?” “Who blew more bubbles?”
